Over 50,000 victims are buried here, making it a sobering reminder of the atrocities. Mass graves are outside the church house. It symbolizes the betrayal of sanctuary and provides a deep insight into the genocide’s scale. The site is about an hour’s drive from Kigali, and hiring a local guide to enhance the experience. Be prepared for a very emotional visit, as the stories and preserved evidence are extremely powerful. Nyamata is about 30 km south of Kigali.
